Powder Coating

Bright Ideas!

The Rudolf Wiegmann Metallcolor GmbH is an enterprise, which was formed in 1996 from within the Rudolf Wiegmann group. The original idea to extent the colour range for steel components used in industrial and commercial construction progressed further, resulting in the creation of the only powder coating plant in Germany to date. Initially, it was intended to be operated as a single-unit coating plant for flat items only but was later utilised for coil coating as well. In 2000,an additional larger-unit coating plant was commissioned, so that all ranges of application could be covered from that time. The latest Rudolf Wiegmann Metallcolor GmbH innovation has been in operation since May 2003: A coating line constructed particularly for bolt and rivet heads.

The Procedure

The workpiece to be coated attracts the powder during the event of electrostatic powder coating. This is because the powder in the spray gun is electrically charged via an electrode during the spraying process. As the workpiece is earthed, an electric field is formed in between the workpiece and the spray gun, thus causing the powder particles to bond with the workpiece surface. Next, the coated workpieces proceed through a furnace and the powder is thermally cross-linked to form a tight film. This process takes place at temperatures of in between 160 – 250 °C, depending on the powder substance used.

Environmental Control?

No trouble whatsoever! Because they are solvent-free, coating powders are presently classed as belonging to the group of the most eco-friendly substances. In addition, the reclamation of coating powder ensures an almost complete consumption without emission. Accumulated wastewater will be processed in a closed cycle in order to stop contaminated water from polluting the environment.

Properties

Taking into account the preconditioning procedure, the variable layer thickness of 60 – 120 µm affords first-class corrosion control.
The powder coating is remarkably scratch resistant. This is a highly significant aspect regarding items such as roof components.
The powder coating in our company is done to the highest standards. Subsequently, all sheet metal we have coated is wholly bendable, making it possible to reshape the piece later on. This is a feature we are particularly proud of, especially since not every powder coating manufacturer can give this the same assurance.
Powder coated sheet metal is totally impact-resistant. The much-dreaded chipping off of varnish following blunt impacts does not occur.
Depending on which type of varnish was used, the product shows a resistance to chemicals such as solvents, acids and alkaline solutions.
For use on roofs and facades, the powder coating offers first-rate protection against UV-rays, weathering and corrosion – in actual fact, it provides protection against all adverse weather conditions.
Powder coating is a much favoured method even in places where high abrasion resistance is of necessity.
